AGENTS.md Explained: Making Your Business Readable by AI Agents

If llms.txt is the business card you hand to AI models, AGENTS.md is the employee training manual you give to AI agents. It tells them not just what your business does, but how to talk about it.

What Is AGENTS.md?

The Key Sections

Basic facts about your business. Keep it concise and factual. Include your exact business name, type, location, and a 2-3 sentence description. AI agents use this for quick identification.

Key Differentiators

This is the most important section. When an AI agent compares your business to competitors, what should it emphasize? Be specific. "Great customer service" is useless. "All coaches are CSCS certified with a maximum class size of 12" is extractable and citable.

Services & Pricing

List your services with enough detail for an agent to answer "Do you offer X?" and "How much does X cost?" questions. If pricing varies, give ranges or starting points. Agents that can provide pricing information convert at dramatically higher rates than those that redirect to your website.

Common Questions

Anticipate what consumers will ask AI agents about your business and provide clear answers. This section directly feeds into how agents respond to queries. It's like an FAQ, but written for machines to parse and relay.

Avoid

Equally important: tell agents what not to say. Outdated information, common misconceptions, or incorrect associations can persist in AI training data. The Avoid section gives agents a correction layer.

AGENTS.md vs. agent.json
